Can Christians listen to all types of music?

February 15th, 2009 by admin

Because when I first seriously rededicated my life to Christ, I stopped listening to all music, only Christian music, 24/7. But I’m starting to want to listen to some inspiration and R&B, I don’t know if this is bad as a Christian, should I be worried about myself. Or is this okay, because the bible says put away all filthy communication, and these songs aren’t filthy, at least I don’t think so. But it also says sing praises unto the Lord, and it says that God is a jealous God. So should I only listen to music that praises God. Please back up your answers with untwisted scripture, thanks in advance.

Back when I was a Christian, I listened to ALL kinds of music. And I still do.. icon wink Can Christians listen to all types of music?
Though now I am no longer a Christian, I'm a fully fledged Atheist instead.
Maybe that's what did it..?

Yep you can listen to all types of music.

Don’t get carried away with legalism it will bind you with a chain you have been freed of.

Allow the Holy Spirit and common sense to guide you on what is acceptable and what is not.

If you are a young person, then you well know how important music—particularly various forms of pop or rock music—is to many your age. Music has even been called “part of teenage metabolism.” It is estimated that in his last six years of school, the average youth in the United States will listen to over four hours of rock music a day! That surely shows a lack of balance. It is not that there is anything wrong with enjoying something that makes you feel good or happy. Certainly Jehovah, the Creator of joyous music, does not expect young people to be sullen and miserable. In fact, he commands his people: “Rejoice in Jehovah and be joyful, you righteous ones; and cry out joyfully, all you who are upright in heart.” (Psalm 32:11) To young ones his Word says: “Rejoice, young man, in your youth, and let your heart do you good in the days of your young manhood.”—Ecclesiastes 11:9.

Perhaps you need to make some changes in the type of music you choose. If you have records, tapes, and discs that carry immoral and demonistic themes, you should immediately dispose of them. (Compare Acts 19:19.) This does not mean that you cannot enjoy music; not all popular music is objectionable. Some youths have also learned to broaden their musical tastes and now enjoy certain classical, folk, light jazz, and other forms of music. The Kingdom Melodies tapes have helped many youths develop a taste for uplifting orchestral music.

You have to pray about it. dont listen to man because man will direct you in the wrong direction. Me personally i dont, i look at it like if its not glorifying him, then i shouldnt listen to it.

Music is an expression of the soul. It’s art. There is nothing filthy about something as beautiful as that. Don’t walk on egg shells. Live your life!

As a Christian, you are encouraged by Jesus to do many things in life, including enjoying the richeness of life and the music thereof.

Here is a man who firmly believes in Jesus Christ and who worships him every day.

  11. 1 Peter 1:25 Says:

As a Christian and a part time musician for most of my life, before coming to the Lord, I played in the Taverns, Night clubs, Moose Halls, etc. playing the top 40 of the day, but after coming to the Lord, I can still play some of the old songs I used to play back then, some times jamming around with friends or family, but my heart just isn’t in it like it was when I was in the world. I can only say, go by what the “Holy Spirit” says to you about the music you listen to, as a child of God the Holy Spirit will speak to your heart and tell you if the music you are listening to is edifying your flesh or your spirit.
    Hope this is helpful.
    God bless you,
    your brother in Christ.

I am giving you the Christian perspective. Yes you should listen to music that praises and glorifies God. Does that mean it has to be “Church service”, “Christian”, “Gospel” type music only? Maybe, maybe not. What about classical music with no words? David played the harp for King Saul and it helped calm him from his moments of insanity. I would say if the song or music has any hint of negitivity, I would leave it alone. As far as R&G goes most of the modern Gospel music is R&B in style so you may want try that.
